On February 16th, 2009, a Stamford Connecticut woman named Charla Nash had both of her hands and her face torn off by a friend’s pet chimpanzee. The chimp, Travis, was well known and generally liked in the community and had even appeared in several national TV commercials. The injuries that Charla received were so horrific that counseling services would need to be provided to almost everyone, including medical professionals, who encountered her in the days following the attack. In this episode, we’ll discuss in graphic detail the attack and resulting injuries, the circumstances leading up to the mauling, and Charla’s subsequent face transplant.
